Still missing Tim Russert’s joy and lack of cynicism. Regarding the election coverage. The New York Times weighs in today with some supposed inside info on who is being considered (I almost said vetted but I’m so sick of that word, are you?!)
It’s Saturday night, we get an extra hour to enjoy (don’t forget to turn your clocks back!) Thinking about who might get the job on Meet The Press is enough mental exercise for me tonight. They (NYT) name a lot of people. They say NBC is considering, among others, Katie Couric. I’m not sure how I feel about that but it’s not awful (how is that for a recommendation lol). She was always a serious interviewer when she worked for NBC4 in Washington DC. Do you think she has that star quality which would make her a better choice than someone without that quality?
I really want someone to get the job who isn’t already embedded in my mind as a liberal or conservative sympathizer. Someone who isn’t wearing their politics on both sleeves. I have my own views just like all of you do, but I’m more interested in people who might ask the right questions, the ones we’d ask if we could; someone less interested in being partisan and more interested in cutting to the chase . That’s what I want.
Two names mentioned really excite me. The first is Ted Koppel !!! I loved his Nightline town meetings. He hasn’t been sitting around watching television since he left ABC News, and he did not retire! Ted went to China, among other things, for his Discovery Channel work. As an interviewer, Ted never suffered fools. More importantly, he loved his work (in a way that was similar to Russert without the ebulliance) and loves to dig into issues. I think he’d be great.
The second person is Gwen Ifil from Washington Week on PBS. She’s a class act and on her own PBS work, she asks very good questions and amazing analytical skills. Sometimes the talking heads on shows like this seem to like to listen to themselves talk more than brainstorming issues and ideas (ya think??) and she is not like that stereotype.
Here are some of the others being scrutinized (see I still managed to avoid that V word): David Gregory, Chuck Todd (I like him too), Chris Matthews (too partisan and doesn’t delve deep enough for Meet the Press). Check out the NYT’s expose for more names being bantered, and come back and tell me how you disagree with my choices
Peace Out - hope you all get to enjoy an extra hour of sleep. 3C

Thanks for musing on this topic! I would like NBC News to seriously consider Gwen Ifill, Katie Couric, Andrea Mitchell or another woman and/or person of color. All five of the Sunday morning talk show hosts are Caucasian males. According to studies by Media Matters for America, the guests on the Sunday shows are overwhelming white and male. “Meet the Press” is the least diverse of them all. Three out of four guests on “Meet the Press” are Caucasian males.
Your readers who want to demand diversity from NBC News should write a letter to its president, Steve Capus, through http://www.dontletNBCdiswomen.org. Thanks! Margot

Margot I love that you provided the link – thank you. It would be easy to say that the guests reflect the hiring policies of the administrations and the voting policies of the voters. But in reality there are many women who could be guests but are not chosen. I’ll head to the site to give them my opinions!

I definitely don’t think Katie’s the one. I would much prefer Ann Curry. She’s far more the serious newswoman, asks good questions in interviews, AND allows others to speak. She’s not self-absorbed.
Andrea Mitchell might be a good choice as well, especially with her background at the Whitehouse. However, it might be hard for her to listen to attacks on her husband.
I certainly hope they don’t go with Chris Matthews – he’s WAY too partisan and likes too much to listen to himself talk.

Elaine, hi. I like Ann Curry too good choice! That ‘not allowing others to speak’ is a big thing for Chris Matthews, isn’t it lol.

12 David Gregory Chosen to Moderate Meet The Press // Dec 2, 2008 at 8:08 pm
[...] I posted a few weeks ago – musing about who should get chosen as moderator for Meet The Press. I received an email from Margot Friedman today, who commented on that post with a call to action website asking NBC to consider hiring a qualified female moderator…. I know I took the challenge and I suspect some of my commenters and readers may have as well. [...]
