This elegant hawk took up residence in a tree and decided to stay for a while…that is how I was able to eventually get a somewhat decent photo of him. Picture this, Wednesday, late morning, I’m doing some Internet displays for listings I have …..when a larger than normal bird flies into the sweet gum tree on my tree lawn. I thought about the camera…but normally enjoying the sighting of a hawk lasts only a few minutes. Then he moved one tree over and pointed his breast at the sun and stayed a while. It was bitterly cold out so I couldn’t blame him for trying to find some warmth. Needless to say, all the small critters and birds were nowhere to be seen for the 45 minutes he graced my street. Peace Out – 3C

Graced your street? More like looking pillaging on your street is why there wasn’t any wildlife.
Great picture….we occasionally get a small hawk in the back yard. The local Mocking Birds manage to scurry him away quickly.

I feed the birds, so there is one that often sits on my fence. He/she usually goes after the voles that burrow around my evergreens.
One day I was out working in the yard, and saw him/her sitting on my roof eyeing The Murph. Guess he was trying to decide if Murphy was a rabbit. At that point, I shooed the hawk away.
I agree, they’re fascinating to watch. You’re lucky to have been able to take the photo.

Bob, I soooo miss the mockingbirds. For sure they are feisty enough to chase hawks.
Elaine, Murphy would have been a gourmet dinner! lol
If you are not a small critter, hawks are good luck!

I’m so glad you took the time to take the picture AND post it. We should all do that more often. Thanks for sharing.

Jill, he cooperated by hanging around a bit! Thanks.

How funny to read this blog when I just took a picture of a hawk in my back yard. My girls were getting ready for school and had me come look – they realized it was a hawk before I did. I’ve never seen one in the wild before and to think he was in my suburban tree. Wow.
Even better…. when he flew off, he had prey in his talons so you really saw him in action. My girls felt sorry for the poor mouse…

Josette, how fun to be able to share that experience with your children! Except maybe the mouse part lol. I vote for the idea that it really IS good luck to have a hawk appear near your home. Good karma for you too!

I live 1 mile from downtown in St. Paul, walking distance to most anything urban, and I have seen deer, opposum, fox, and wild turkeys in close proximity. Of course, they are joined by the proverbial pigeon who I’m told come back to roost because of the smell they leave behind! Yuck!

Bonnie, you are lucky to see fox. And you remind me that I have no pidgeons! Wonder why, not that I am complaining! It’s cool that we get to live with some wildlife in the ‘hood no?

Yeah, I think if I were a small critter or bird and saw that hawk I’d be hiding, too! I’m glad he stayed long enough for you to both enjoy him and take that pic. Nature is truly awe-inspiring.

Leanne yes it truly is! It’s almost time for the woodpecker to come back to my sweet gum tree (maybe one month) Spring, thankfully, is not that far off.
