Unique Homes: Cleveland Goes Modern at Beck Center

November 15th, 2007 · No Comments

Cleveland Goes Modern is a cool exhibit of individual homes built in our area. This was not on my radar until I read a Free Times article about it. In fact when I went to the Beck Center website I can’t even find it listed as an event (maybe that’s me, not sure).  What is modernism? Well like most cultural phenomenon it encompasses philosophy, architecture, music, literature, art, and everything else.

It was (is) an attempt to simplify, naturalize and make ‘realistic’ the world of art in all of it’s forms. For art, you can go to Dali for examples.  For literature, one of my three favorite books of all time (so far!), All Quiet on the Western FrontSo by the time we get to 1970, we have the organic movement and a search for truth and simplicity with cooperatives. And we have what this Beck Center Exhibit offers, modern residential architecture. Has anyone already been to the exhibit?

Works by several architects are featured and the exhibit info is as follows (courtesy of The Free Times) and there is even a panel discussion this evening:

Carole….this is fabulous!! Cleveland goes Modern!
I have to add that the “modernist” movement is highly misunderstood, but is mainly because of lack of knowledge. I applaud the city of Cleveland for educating the public.

Ines with your architectural knowledge I would love it if you could write a guest post on here sometime about modernism!

I would be happy to Carole – just give me a little time and I will make it happen.
