The new year will be here soon. How will you focus your time? There will be a lot of talk around the Country, and certainly here in NE Ohio, about stimulus and proactive grass roots efforts to stimulate the economy. One suggestion guaranteed to help our economy is better public transportation and passenger rail service.

I encourage all of you to attend our first 3C Corridor meeting of the year, right here in Cleveland, on January 7th. The details are below in an All Aboard Ohio announcement.

All Aboard Ohio is the educational ‘arm’ – for lack of a better word, regarding rail issues and development in Ohio. Keeping everyone informed, holding meetings to stimulate discussion and action, and lobbying when necessary (which is all the time!). None of this can happen without money. So I also encourage you, or your company, to sponsor All Aboard Ohio this year. With a new President, a bad economy, a plethora of ideas for the economy, and Federal money to be had, it’s almost like a perfect storm has been set up for passenger rail development in Ohio.

Other states are lobbying for rail money as we are, but it would be hard to argue that Ohio should be at the top of the list to receive it, considering the state of our passenger rail system and more importantly, our dire need for economic stimulus.

Even if you would just like more information about the issue, or are unsure how you feel about passenger rail, please come to the January 7th Stakeholders meeting to learn and interact with us.

I’ve appreciated the comments on recent posts about all of us getting involved to help make changes in our NE Ohio world. We talked a bit about needing to feel more a part of our communities and the decision-making process. I got an email announcement yesterday from All Aboard Ohio, announcing ODOT’s new 21st Century Transportation Priorities Task Force. Seems that people really do want to know what we think, at least about the myriad of transportation issues. Here is an excerpt of explanation:

“Unlike past statewide planning efforts, the Transportation Priorities Task Force will explore a broader spectrum of issues facing the state,” said ODOT Director James Beasley. “We need to prioritize how the state balances the movement of people and freight, promotes safety and reduces congestion, creates jobs and encourages responsible growth, helps to build sustainable communities, and links all modes of transportation – connecting highways to rail, aviation, water ports, and transit.”

Here is a list of task force members. Frank Jackson is an executive chair and the only one I recognize from our area. However, there are plenty of people on the list representing groups and they could very well be from NE Ohio. I would love to be able to talk with Larry Davis, the President of the Ohio Trucking Assn – and also a task force member. Freight has to be carried by trains to pick up the slack for trucking because it can’t handle the load by itself anymore…at least that is what we are told. This task force says it wants my input and so Larry Davis will be one of the first people I address in my comments.

Yes, everyone, here is your chance to weigh in on what you think priorities should be; light rail, high speed, better more complete rail systems; whatever you think and how you think it would help your area or family personally, let them know! And here is the link for your comments.

It sounds as if there will be various task force meetings throughout the State….the first one is in Columbus at the beginning of May. Check out the site, get the details, and add your comments!

It occurs to me that we had a foreclosure task force that did a yeoman’s job and that good Statewide efforts seem to be growing out of that task force’s report. This Transportation Priorities Task Force could be a chance for us to have a lot of input into what direction we take. I guess I like that fact that there are bright rays of hope (as far as grassroots input and connectivity is concerned) and not just gloom and doom. It tells me we can continue to work towards making a difference in many other areas as well.

If you want to talk to some cool ‘train’ people, tomorrow is your chance to do that. All Aboard Ohio has a booth at the Metroparks Zoo Earthfest 2008 event. Please stop by (I will be there from 3-5pm as well). I do believe it’s all happening at the zoo? Peace Out -3C

Sometimes one thought leads to another and that is what happened to get me to this post. First, All Aboard Ohio is having their Third Annual Ohio Rail/Transit Summit in Columbus tomorrow. It’s a morning chock full of information, judging from the agenda, and an afternoon of lobbying for The Ohio Hub Plan ! If you can attend, it’s still not too late to sign up (you can even do it on the website through paypal). If you have followed the news (or just stopped at a gas station today), you know prices are on their way up again. We need improved public transportation and we need the Ohio Hub Initiative. While I was on All Aboard Ohio’s website, I noticed their link to Better World Club. Thus my ‘second thought’ for this post. Remember the Un Cola (7Up)? Well, Better World touts itself as the auto club to join, as opposed to that triple A one lol. They donate 1% of their revenue (yearly? monthly?) to support of environmental causes. They provide gas purchase discounts and check this out, discounts on purchases of hybrid cars? Okay, I’m signing up for their regular email newsletter called Kicking Asphalt. I can’t resist.

How can you not get excited about transportation issues. Peace Out – 3C – The Transportation Geek

It seems there are more things to do today than there are hours, which must be why I am up at 5 o’clock in the morning. So let’s feature a video. One of my passions, the proposed 3C Corridor Plan/Ohio Hub Initiative. All Aboard Ohio’s website is the place to find out the most recent news and details. Read my Active Rain post on The Hub and when you get to the bottom of the comment list you will find a way to support this project. You need Quick Time in order to watch this video. It features fast trains (110 mph) and as the narrator says “…..5000 HP jet engine bullet that can get you anywhere in Ohio in an hour or two…..” This is definitely, they say, “Not Your Daddy’s Train.” Climb on board and Enjoy the video!!
