We hear a lot about vacant store fronts and boy can it seem dismal to ride the bus and view them from the bus window. In the cold of this past winter, I started to feel better about my own little corner of the world; my real corner! Key bank put in a drive through in the Marc’s shopping center. May not sound like much to you, but when it was all finished, it really made the place look better, allowing my eyes to focus on the fresh, new drive through instead of the vacant storefronts on the other side of the parking lot. Imagine how dismal it must have seemed to me I said to myself (yeah I talk to myself), to think a drive through is such an improvement.
Then it occurred to me how much better another part of that same corner looked now. The bar changed hands about a year ago and is now called Rhonda and Mike’s. They painted the building when they moved in, had a grand opening pig roast. And in fact just had another one to celebrate their one year anniversary.
For years, a multi-use building on the other corner had looked a bit sad. A law office had apparently been operating the storefront forever; and the apartments in the back, well, they looked sorry too.
Then a resale shop moved in. They painted the entire place, hung planters. I don’t know how their business is doing, I hope well. But I can say that all this sprucing up has made a huge difference in how I perceive the corner of my street. It seems vibrant, prettier, and like we are coming alive not dying. Three modest re dos and life looks better, there is no doubt about it.
It reinforces how small business is a part of our community; residents and business people intertwined. I wish their could be more development along this corridor. Yes I know, we all do.
I’m attending a summit for three days this week and am excited about it. It’s billed as a Sustainability Summit and I’m so excited about it I don’t even mind that I have to be there at 7:30 ish every day. I’m hoping to hear from other residents and businesses and educators and more importantly, glad to have the chance to sort of roll up my sleeves and bounce ideas around. I’ll keep you posted. For now, I’m just happy that business in my corner of the world has improved a bit. Peace Out – 3C
