Scenes From Chester Avenue

February 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Politician A Toy Sculpture by Billie Lawless, photo by Carole Cohen 2008Mike White apparently didn’t like it but I do.  The Politician A Toy sculpture has been brightening up the Chester Avenue landscape since 1996, a year before I moved back to the area.  Wonder if Mayor White has changed his mind about it, if it’s grown on him?

Here is a link to Billie Lawless’ website and a write up about it. Love the description of what ‘makes up ‘ this piece, including television sets for eyes and each side of the bow tie weighs 800 pounds?

The Design Rag blog said in ’06 the building and lot on which the sculpture sits was being sold and it would have to move. Either the property hasn’t sold or the new owner said let it stay? I guess I have to do some sleuthing.  If any of you know what  happened or didn’t happen, I would love it if you could fill in the blanks for me.

I love it. When I moved back I had an apartment on Derbyshire in Cleveland Heights but my Mom lived in Strongsville.  At least once a week I trekked to the West side and Chester Avenue was my chosen route….each time I would slow down or pause to admire it.  I’m quite positive I am not alone in my love for this piece.  A fine tribute to the fact that Cleveland is a hub of engineering. I have to admit I don’t pay attention to the political double entendres.  When I snapped this photo earlier in the week it was particularly cool to see it in all it’s glory, since sunshine was elusive.  I decided not to crop the photo  because somehow the graffiti on the road sign seemed apropos lol.  Peace Out – 3C
