Rebirth of a Neighborhood? The Brothers Lounge May Help

June 9th, 2008 · 4 Comments

w-116th-kitchen-with-huge-pantry.jpgI have a listing on W. 116th street just South of Detroit, a very elegantly updated and restored colonial with wood floors throughout the first floor living area (even the kitchen, pictured to the left). I’ve been exploring the area because of the listing and there are many things to recommend it. Do you want to be able to walk to a coffee house? Arabica is at the corner. Do you want to walk to the RTA? I did that Sunday after an open house and it was a piece of cake (ten minute walk to the Madison/W. 117 RTA stop – and the trains run every ten minutes even on Sunday). Now add the rebirth of The Brothers Lounge to the reasons why you might want to live there.

This is a piece of Cleveland history that began at the end of the ’50s as (from what I can gather) a blues club. Then it fell on hard times and was vacant for a while. Then two entreprenuerial gentlemen named Riggs and Riemenschneider decided it needed to live again. After a lot of money and a good rehab, it’s open again!  I ferreted out this article written by Joe Crea in  the PD about the new owners and rehab. Apparently the ballroom is fabulous. The line-up of artists is all over the map so if you like a ton of different music like I do, you can probably find something to see every month. You like salsa music? July 8th may be your date since Sammy DeLeon’s band is playing. An alternative rock group called Stroke 9 sounds good to me and they are playing at Brothers Lounge on Friday, June 20th. There is a wide spectrum of musical genres represented already on the band list so check it out.

In the PD article they interview someone from the Cudell Improvement Inc Development Corporation. She talks about how a club like this, which is such an institution but also a vital entity in a neighborhood, can truly affect growth of other establishments.

This is really a cool little section of Cleveland and it gets me thinking. Why not live in a house in walking distance to all of this? And close to RTA? I don’t normally blog about listings but this house  is gorgeous and I’m thinking someone is going to be really happy to find it, move in, and call it home.  I also know I plan on checking out a band or two this summer!  Peace Out – 3C

Carole! I love this post, and the one just before it and the one just after it. These are wonderful to read. You do a great job on subjects I wouldn’t otherwise be following.

Hope you are good too by the way! :)

My house on W45th may go on the market in the next six months…funny thing…I don’t understand people who don’t want to live in a place where they can walk to many places they love!

Hi Elaine, sounds like both of us are true blue city folk lol. I checked my walk score and it is 52 which is average yes? We have the services but not as many of the entertainment places I bet you need to get a higher score. This is a cool site, thanks for linking it. I bet you do better than average on W. 45th!
