Nothing Sexier Than A Steam Locomotive

December 28th, 2007 · 12 Comments

steam-train-in-kent-england.jpgWell, maybe a few things but……. I digress.  I had to post this. I’ve had a friend in England, Pauline, since I was about ten years old. We started out as pen pals, no joke. The Cleveland Press used to list addresses of overseas kids who wanted pen pals.  I had one in Sweden for a while and one in Adelaide Australia. The only lasting one turned into a life long friend: Pauline. She and her husband took a vacation to Kent and Dartmouth etc during warmer months and she sent me photos of the trip. Naturally I was over the moon about the steam trains! And they run! I’m going to post one here and hold out on one for a later time.  Too bad when (not IF) we get our high speed train system working we can’t have trains that look like this :-)  Peace Out - 3C

We have a very cool steam train here in CT. They have a North Pole Express this time of year.

A track ran next to my parent’s home when I was growing up. Loved the sound of these trains. Plus, it was fun to wave to the engineers & caboose guy. Ah-h-h, nostalgia!

You would be in heaven if England still has many of these trains.

Grand memory Elaine! Being involved a bit here with ‘train people’ (I guess I am one now lol), I smile when one or two wil talk about living close to a t rack and enjoying the proximity. I know at night when it is quieter here, the train whistle makes me smile (it’s about a quarter mile from me).

Always thought you were from the wrong side of the track. :)

The view is pretty good from this side Bob :-)

That is simply unbelievable, Carole. Besides chuckling over the name Pauline, which is quite rare these days (it happens to be my mom’s name too), it’s an amazing story about the enduring power of newspapers, particularly the late, much-beloved Cleveland Press. Last year, I wrote a piece (link below) about how it still lives on in so many ways, 25 years after its closing. If I knew your pen pal story then, I surely would have included it. Anyway, thanks for writing this lovely item.

Carole - you should get together with Pete Doty, an agent in Denver (www.petedoty.com) who is a train buff and plans his trips based on what trains are running where!

Hi John, it’s such a pretty name, Pauline! How fun that it’s your Mom’s name. I saved the link to your article….I read it once but it’s really good! Thank’s for pointing it out!

sharon, hello! I will stalk this Pete guy if he is a train person lol. Ty for pointing him out to me! Happy New Year to you both.
