NE Ohio Food Manufacturing Businesses Are A Growing Commodity

February 13th, 2012 · 2 Comments

Love featuring our area’s unique business niches and when they taste good too, well, that’s an added plus.  This PD article features Shearer’s LEED’s (green) designation and the fact that overall,  food manufacturing is an economic niche in NE Ohio that is growing.

You can read the article, but going to provide as many links as I can to some of the businesses the PD featured:

Great Lakes Cheese  - I honed in on the ‘Awards’ category, and in 2010 they won various awards for extra sharp cheddar and provolone.

Athens Foods -  You’ve probably seen them in the frozen food freezers at the grocers.  The website offers recipes!  I know they moved to a Cleveland location a year or so ago.

Shearer’s -  I went right to their ‘careers’ link (well ok, first I watched the dancing fiesta guys with hats that move…check out Tango chips :-)   ).   They have several job openings.

I’m going to have to walk by the tortilla factory behind the West Side Market and see if I can get a name.  When I’m walking my dog (Truman is our office mascot on Saturdays), I love the smell of tortilla’s wafting from the building.  While I’m getting the name, maybe they have samples !

Do you know of any other smaller companies that are doing really well in the food manufacturing niche?  Would love to hear about them.

Shearer’s is doing some cool things. Other than making some really good chips, their new factory in Massillon/Perry Twp. is LEED Platinum. It’s the first snack food company in the world to accomplish this.

great link, Derek, thanks, ‘first in the World’ is pretty cool indeed. And their products taste good, I agree. Unlike that other ‘S’ company that distributes here..
