I joined a Seth Goodin site called Triiibes. It’s the website inspired by the writing of his latest book called Tribes which I recommend highly. It’s great in and of itself (don’t you love that phrase?), but some of us decided to also participate in a challenge. It’s called the Effort Diet. No it’s not about losing weight. It’s about setting six month goals that can be really constructive, both in business and on a personal level. One of the things I decided to do was to take one day a week completely ‘off’ from work and spend it with friends whenever possible.
Yesterday’s group included four friends: a wonderful young woman who started out as a client, her mom, and two friends I have known since before most of you (or anyone!) was born. lol. We were doing dinner and a concert. Dinner was in close proximity to the concert venue at Joe’s Diner. Many of you probably eat regularly at Joe’s. But if you don’t yet happen to know about it, I wanted to be sure to mention it here. Consistently good food. I broke the bank yesterday and ordered a steak which was perfectly cooked (you know, crispy on the outside and still mooing on the inside) – and one of the best tasting steaks I’ve had in a restaurant in quite a while. We all had different main courses and everyone loved their food. I first knew of Joe’s because of what I am told is their original spot, a smaller place just past W. 117th and Madison in Lakewood. They keep factory hours there, meaning breakfast and lunch and then close up shop at 3pm. Both venues feature their mile high pastrami or corned beef sandwiches, for those of you who love that kind of treat. The one we went to is a bit fancier and open longer hours. (Located on Hilliard just over the Rocky River border) It’s nice to be able to frequent a place that prides itself on it’s quality meals. It was a full house of course, as are most places with really good food. You can spend ten bucks, you can splurge like I did and spend $14.50, with lots of less expensive fare and sandwiches to pick from as well. Here is the Plugged In Cleveland review page for Joe’s Diner.
Second up was our concert with the North Coast Men’s Chorus. It was a holiday concert, and while some of the songs were somewhat traditionally arranged, they do a slight dissonance that is very cool. Not to mention the fact that the guys can really sing. The songs I liked best were a bit irreverent (like Mrs. Claus in a negligee lamenting the fact that Santa never came home after his yearly run). Believe me, there were a lot of great belly laughing lines in their choice of songs!
They seem to perform regularly at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium. It’s on the High School campus at 140th (Bunts) and Franklin. My only scrooge like complaint was that they charged us money to park in the high school lot. I know, the school, like all other schools, needs money. It just seemed like a bit of overkill to me.
Anyway, there are more concerts scheduled. One in the Spring deals with the history of the 1980s. Here is the Northcoast Men’s Chorus website to check out for yourself. It was really a great evening and a nice change from the usual work day! Peace out – 3C
