My Inner Belt Bridge Musings And The Elusive Signs Saying ‘No Trucks Please’

For the last two weeks or so, I seem to be on the east side of Cleveland more often than not. This is not a chore, I love the east side. Anyway, in order to get there (at least when I’m headed to University Circle from home), I take the Inner Belt Bridge. Needless to say, I’ve watched with interest the lane restrictions and the new truck restrictions.

Yesterday was my first day on route to and on the Inner belt bridge with the truck ban intact. Keep in mind, I knew there were restrictions.  And I saw news reports about ‘hundreds of signs being posted’ on local news channels.  Yesterday, the only thing I noticed was a flashing sign at about West Blvd. on I-90 letting drivers know trucks were not on the bridge. Since I didn’t notice other signs, I paid more attention today, scanning everywhere. Yes, there are white signs with black lettering above the regular ‘split’ signs at 490 and 90 saying no trucks or in the case of 490, trucks routed here.

But to be honest, if I didn’t know about the ban, the signs are not really glaringly obvious.  So it was no surprise to me that on both days, there were always several trucks pulled over on the side of the road by the police. Shouldn’t they have more flashing signs? Maybe it’s just me.

Then there are the lane restrictions. If the same number of cars travels on two lanes or four, isn’t the weight the same? I’m assuming the reason is that weight disttribution is important? Meaning, having the weight at the center of the bridges instead of the edges, which may be the weakest points, structurally?

It’s all a mystery to me. Luckily, I have not had to travel on the Inner Belt Bridge when it’s rush hour so there hasn’t been a delay for me. It’s obvious however, that there must be some annoying slow downs when it IS rush hour. Not that it doesn’t sound warranted; it does.

I was quite amused at the fact that as I entered I-90 from Chester Avenue today (heading West) there were six tractor trailers ahead of me, all entering per usual. I wanted a bull horn to warn them lol.  And I could be wrong, but I did not see a flashing sign at the entrance saying no trucks. Again, maybe there was on e of those small white signs with black lettering — but if I was not tuned into the local news and was an out of state truck driver, I’d know my route and not really pay attention to a little sign like that.

Just my opinon.  Peace Out – 3C
