How Gardens Can Work

August 15th, 2009 · No Comments

You could argue that most of Britain’s climate is similar to our NE Ohio climate.  Our growing seasons are short but potentially plentiful. This garden story is in today’s Washington Post. It’s about a community garden in Todmorden England.  They explain how this cooperative style garden allows people to get their dinner ingredients from the community garden.

You could argue that Britain has always been community oriented; at least since The Battle of the Bulge.  After surviving World Wars, or going through them, it seemed to bring them all permanently connected.

I would also argue we have some history in that area too. WWII saw people rationing and saving cans for the war effort, etc.  And after Sustainable Cleveland 2019, I can tell you there is tons of  enthusiasm about connecting all of us in a common purpose to revitalize NE Ohio around various energy issues.  It didn’t take the summit to show that gardening in neighborhoods was/is becoming more and more popular around here.  They are popping up everywhere.  Chickens are being allowed in neighborhoods.  I could go on and on.

The Washington Post article goes a long way to illustrate how community gardening can work.

Speaking of the Summit, I have had several conversations and also emails today with Summit participants. The enthusiasm we had there is not abating. It’s very exciting.  I find my main source of enthusiasm around the idea of greening up our small businesses.  I’ve been collecting information and web links all week and will do a whole post about this tomorrow. In the meantime, this Todmorden England community garden story may just put a Saturday smile on your face.  I hope so.  Peace Out – 3C

PS: Give credit where credit is due. The updates/posts/articles from the PD’s John Funk were terrific recaps about the Summit.  I’m going to post the links here; many of you probably already read them, but just in case:
