When you were a kid, did you dream of being an astronaut? As you got older, did you wish you could be one of the first civilians on The Shuttle? Have you dreamed about socking away some dollars so you can take a trip (isn’t it with Richard Branson?) on one of the first commercial space flight?
Yeah I know, but day to day expenses being what they are, it just doesn’t work out, does it? Well now there may be a way for you to fulfill your dream, only it will have to be a truly spiritual experience because, uh, well, you will be dead.
Check it out. Celestis, Inc. has teamed up with some other companies to get permission to attach capsules that contain cremated remains to robotics. Yes, and you can have some of your ashes taken to the moon!
“….The cremation capsules would remain on the moon with the lunar landers when the missions were complete.
Chafer said he expected about 1,000 capsules containing ashes to be launched on the first lunar mission, expected in late 2009 or early 2010, and about 5,000 on future flights.
‘The moon is a special place,’Chafer said, adding a half dozen people had already signed up for the service….”
It may sound odd to you, or not. But in reality, it doesn’t cost much more than an expensive burial in our customary form. I know funerals in my family that have cost almost $10,000 and for sure you can spend more than that. This service supposedly costs about the same amount.
And remember Scotty from Star Trek? His real name was James Doohan. And appropriately, some of James Doohan’s ashes are awaiting flight on one of these missions.
Here is a link to Odyssey Moon - one of the robotics companies with a relationship with Celestis. They have a cool video (it’s on You Tube as well) and their site outlines a lot of fascinating stuff they will be doing on the Moon and elsewhere. Check it out! I know I would have never thought anything like this was possible when I was a kid. So who knows, maybe we really can fix our financial issues and housing issues, because apparently, anything is possible! Peace Out - 3C
