FYI: MD Teachers Unions Become Slots Proponents

March 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Ohio seems to be perpetually debating the issue of slots or no slots so this might be interesting to you, I know it was to me, and a bit surprising. The Washington Post reports today that The Maryland State Teachers Assn. has voted to support and campaign for slot machines in Maryland. The issue has been as divisive there as it has here, and this is the first time the teachers union has taken a stance in favor of it. Philip Rucker of the Post stated that they are estimating education in Maryland could receive an input of $600 million every year once the system is up and running.

The Maryland State Legislature voted this past Fall to put 15k slot machines at various locations. Will slots get teacher union support here in Ohio? Does the fact that Maryland, a long hold out on slots, is now getting them, mean Ohio will get slots?

Maryland’s Comptroller Peter Franchot is not an advocate of slots and this is an interesting quote from the article:

“….Franchot, the state’s chief tax collector, said the state could replace the anticipated slots revenue by investing in biotechnology and other emerging scientific industries and stepping up tax collections. But Miller [State Senate President]said the state would be hard-pressed to find an alternative revenue source.

“Peter Franchot says we’re going to get the money from life sciences,” Miller said. “What kind of bs is that?….”

I will ponder this as I head out for house showings in Tremont, an open house at a town house I have listed in Fries & Schuele in Ohio City, and then finally preview a pretty pink Victorian for a client. Peace Out - 3C
