Finally, Ohioans Can License Those Three-Wheeled Cars

September 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Okay so you still have to wear a helmet inside your car (oy) but Ohio has finally joined the 21st Century and decided it’s okay to license these cars. Here is the James Ewinger story about it in the PD.  I was in North Olmsted in the Spring and saw a gold/mustard colored ‘thingy’ with three wheels fly from a driveway on one side of Detroit Rd to the other, scurrying off into the parking lot before I could make sense of it.  I kept asking people, ‘have you ever seen anything that looks like this? ‘  They of course said no! lol  Subsequently I found out what I saw was called a Xebra.

Then I read a story about an Ohio man who bought one, had it shipped into Ohio but then found out they wouldn’t title it because it had three wheels like a cycle but it was covered like a car; paraphrasing, but the bottom line is they didn’t know how to classify it and said he had to park it.  He sold it to someone in a Western state. I remember thinking omg, we are in an energy crisis and we can’t have innovative car design ideas accepted?  Here is a story from Autobloggreen about Ohio’s licensing issues.

Finally cars like these that seem half cycle half real car can be licensed,  Nice part about it is, the one the gentleman in today’s story is driving was made in Tallmadge.  Go green, go Ohio?  Awesome.

Officially, these cars are called ZAP! Xebras.  If you go to the ZAP site you can read about the specs. It’s an $11,700 purchase for the one I copy here, courtesy of their website.  You can reserve one for $100 (like all the other green cars, there is a waiting list).  Not sure this is the be all end all of cars but for short trips and the ‘cool’ factor and 2 to 3 cents a gallon to fill, who can argue?

There is also a ZAP Xebra Truck…check it out cute video on YouTube. (and oy, a three wheeled truck??)

Peace Out – 3C

They are the perfect size for NYC no? They do seem a bit pricey though but then again everything ‘green’ seems to be at leats $11k lol. Nice to see you Mitchell!
