Did You Know Governor Strickland Has An Urban Agenda?

December 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Today I know I have to read a large document Lou Tisler  of NHSGC was kind enough to provide me on recommendations for foreclosure prevention. While reading it, there was an interesting point related to our neighborhoods, and I wanted to post it right away. A friend of mine and I were talking on the phone today about just this issue. Here is the snippet:

“….The Governor is supporting a ‘major initiative in his Urban Agenda to address vacant housing and revitalize neighborhoods. [Ohio Foreclosure Prevention Task Force] recommended that the initiative begin by providing planning and demonstration grants over two to four years to help communities develop comprehensive strategies, and then award incentive grants on a competitive basis to communities that have effective plans to leverage other public and private resources…The Governor’s Office of Urban Development and Infrastructure has the lead on implementation….”

Apparently there is an effort to develop a new public/private partnership to stabilize weak markets and prevent further deterioration of the tax base. (that phrase public/private partnership is getting as aggravating to me as ‘think outside the box,’ but I digress).

Some of our neighborhoods have been in crisis for quite some time, way before this foreclosure issue reared it’s head. This task force, however, is able to address in part, the issue of housing vacancies and abandonment as it affects entire communities.

This Ofc of Urban Dev and Infra. is being led by Marvin Hayes, a Clevelander, who had been an admin for Tim Hagan. You can read the announcement regarding this newly created department here, as well as some of the initial responsibilities outlined by Governor Strickland. Personally I think they need their own website and we should be able to see what they are actually working on and how about a comment section while we are at it? I just browsed through Strickland’s site and don’t see anything more regarding the plans orprojects for this department under any of the monthly update sections on his site. Do you guys know of anything?

Here is what Green City Blue Lake says about restoring our cities.

Note to self: Call Mr. Hayes and see what they are doing.  Peace Out - 3C
