Deciding on a Career? These Jobs May Be Hot In NE Ohio

September 9th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Careerboard is one of the saner places to browse jobs. Why was I browsing? Well, it’s the beginning of the school year for one, and so various clients’ children have made passing comments about not really knowing what to study in school so they can get a job when they are finished. So I decided to see what is listed on Career Board today. These job postings range from about August 24th through today. And there are plenty of other categories I didn’t cover. But here is a sampling that may or may not interest you. Jobs are listed in the Cleveland/Akron/Canton range.

Have you thought of being an architect? Maybe you think there aren’t any jobs.  There were six job postings for architects But get this: there were 91 postings for drafters. Many of them architectural company based and some engineering.  Also one designer posting under architect. Where can you study this field? Bryant Stratton for one.  Kent State  and Bowling Green as well.  (I’m positive there are more, just doing samplings or I’ll be doing my usual war and peace length post!)

NE Ohio is still a hub of manufacturing and engineering. No shortage of engineering degree programs around here. How about jobs? Well for sure there is a demand, and Career Board backs that up. Here is a sample (doesn’t cover every kind of engineering job): Civil Engineers, 19 job listings, Chemical Engineers, 8 job listings, Electrical Engineers, 60 job listings, Industrial Engineers, 9 job listings, Mechanical Engineers, 79 job listings and Structural Engineers, 27 job listings. All totaled just in these categories alone, there are 202 jobs in engineering listed. Many salaries not listed but under electrical engineering I found a range that seemed to cover a $55k to $60k salary through $84k (I bet for more experienced engineers?).

Technology. Yes, you would expect the IT help desk jobs of which there are many. All totaled under Information Systems Jobs there are 158 listings. Jobs like web developers, software developers, systems management, systems trainers, etc.  As an aside, I spent an evening with a few friends and they had a friend with them. Two of them were discussing their degrees in Engineering from CWRU. Now both of them are working in the tech field for CWRU. Interesting how there is crossover learning useful for both areas?

We know many companies/manufacturers are still lamenting a need for skilled machinists.  They pay well but you need the training.  And apparently it still holds true that as these skilled machinists retire, it’s hard to find replacements.  Another good career move and you can go to West Tech or work with Wire NET to find out how to get the training you need for this skilled job.

There are over 350 listings for various health care jobs.  Nurses, Medical Technicians, a director of an autism clinic, visiting nurses, speech therapists.  Way too many categories to name but in our area there will probably not be a lack of jobs available in this industry in my lifetime.

There were no teaching jobs listed; no librarian jobs; only 7 tool and dye jobs although I bet it varies, seems like it would be a good career for this area.

Here is what I would do if I were a student, either in high school or first year of college. Look at job boards like the ones at Career Board. Get an idea what the requirements are for these jobs. And if you find some areas of interest, contact the companies and ask them when they can take time for a phone conversation or email correspondence with you.  I’m sure they would be delighted to tell you what path might help you secure a job in their field.

To finish up, here is a Plain Dealer  article from the end of August discussing the skills needed to work in the automotive technology field.   Peace Out - 3C
