New Dave’s Supermarket To Focus on Needs of Latino Community

October 22nd, 2007 · 2 Comments

This story excited me: Dave’s is converting it’s store near Ridge and Dennison to a Latino specialty market. It’s a niche that can use a store and I have a feeling I will shop there once in a while too. The story was covered in today’s PD in this article.  You know how I can rant about grocery stores. There is nothing that anchors a community, in my opinion, more than a coffee shop or grocery store. This store will be called Dave’s Mercado. I had no idea Dave’s has been around as long as they have, apparently they are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year.  I love the Dave’s in Ohio City, along with a lot of other loyal customers. Peace Out - 3C

What did you think of this story on Cleveland’s real estate market?

Interesting article, Jade, ty for pointing it out. Many of us (and many City officials and Voices and Choices, etc) are trying to address the issue of our population being so different than it was in Cleveland’s heyday. If you look at the stats, we did not lose jobs last year. It would be safe to say though that the number of jobs added overall was fairly small. (what I mean is, we lost jobs in some areas and added them in others so that is the ‘figure’ I am talking about).

Our planning commission and The City of Cleveland Master Plan is addressing this. We have an abundance of housing stock that is very high for the population. They are focusing new development (through the Master Plan) in pockets. Retail pockets, transit oriented development pockets, etc. Rather than trying to work on the premise that our population will regenerate itself to it’s old numbers - I just posted on The Ohio Hub which is a reasonable way to get Ohio and Cleveland moving in the right direction. We have a focus on high-tech and those jobs are definitely coming here. We were also voted one of the top cities to receive capital investment monies last year. So it depends on what figures and studies you look at. The bottom line is, people are still buying but companies are not yet moving here in droves. What I do see with the high tech company recruitment and our medical facilities recruitment efforts, is a slight increase in young people either staying after college or coming back. You can read A Really Bad Cleveland Accent (see my recommended blogs link on the right and click on that one). She is moving back and she talks about why.

This may be the longest comment I have ever left LOL Thanks Jade
