Neighborhood Progress, Inc. received a grant to take care of 50 vacant/foreclosed homes in the Cleveland area. You can read Michael O’Malley’s PD blog post here. Yes it’s a good thing we are getting money to take care of these properties. I just have this nagging feeling that spending money to then rebuild more homes may not be the best use of space? Am I right or wrong, what do you think? It sounds like the homes are spread among several communities from Slavic Village to Tremont and beyond.
If you read the article you will see that the monies for this revitalization program (country wide, not just in NE Ohio) comes in part from Deutsche Bank. I don’t know if that is irony or just amends. What do you think?
Here is what I hope. We continue to get money to help us take care of the abandoned homes issue. But I hope the communities are being consulted as to what the best re-use of that space should be. Maybe they are, and if you know about this I would love it if you could enlighten me further. I really like NPI’s Strategic Investment Initiative (that is my post from November ’07) and have some faith that they will always try to do good for a community. I guess I am just hoping that the grand scheme of things is considered, and that people in the communities in which these homes exist are having their voices heard.
Peace out – 3C
