It was a lively group at the Gypsy Beans Coffee House for the latest Meet the Bloggers event, a question and answer session with Joe Cimperman who is challenging Dennis for the 10th District Congressional seat. I counted about 20 people, including a reporter from the Free Times named Anastasia Pantsios. Expect a Free Times article? There were a lot of people I knew (famous Cleveland bloggers like Bill Callahan and The Ferris’) and it was nice to meet and listen to other neighborhood, blogging people as well as a few from Joe Cimperman’s staff. George Nemeth was awesome at moving things along, thank you George.
Norm Roulet set the tone…..we all had issues questions and were more concerned about answers to issues than whether or not Dennis was a part time Congressman. Here are the highlights:
1. Joe is opposing the ODOT ramping ideas for the West Shoreway Project. He feels it takes the community backward, after all this time of trying to make sure everyone in all the adjacent communities feels included not isolated.
2. Joe supports the Ohio Hub.
3. Joe feels immigration should be handled in a way that matches our Country’s history. Let’s take care of the people who are here illegally and (I’m paraphrasing) come up with a compassionate solution for the rest of the people yet to try to come here.
4. Joe led off with a statement that focused a lot on bringing jobs to the area. He wants to focus on sustainability and high tech jobs and sustainability from the perspective of energy costs that make sense for NE Ohio.
5. He wants to focus on banking regulation and foreclosure issues. He wasn’t specific but seemed to indicate Cleveland had the right idea before being shot down by the court system (re: banking regs)
6. Joe said he felt mortgage loan paperwork should be simplified so people know what they are signing. (not sure how to add regs and simplify but maybe it’s possible).
7. Joe supports the moving of the Port Authority, in total, to E. 55th and wants ODOT and The P Authority and everyone else to look at the entire issue and physical area as one, not in parts, otherwise he feels we will make mistakes.
8. He really did spend a bit of time focusing on Dennis being a part time Congressman and said he got into the race ‘late’ (according to a questioner) because he thought one or two other people were going to jump into the race (he didn’t say who)….and when they did not, he did.
9. He wanted all plans involving Lake Erie to preserve Whisky Island.
10. He answered the question about health care with a story about his Mother’s medical bills and how she died in 1997 and it’s only been in the last two years that those bills were paid off. He says he understands the need for change.
He said more, but to me, these were the highlights. I am sure we will get a different perspective from others at the event. Looking forward to hearing what Bill Callahan has to say especially. When the podcast is up I will link it here.
Peace Out -3C Personal PS: Jill I am sad your back issues kept you from the event!
Update: one other point came back to me; he addressed the ‘No Child Left Behind’ issue, stating that it was a mandate without any teeth (funding) and that, when pressed, he did not support the idea with or without funding.
Update: You can listen to the entire podcast on the Meet The Bloggers Site here.

Thanks for the good work. MTB was originally envisioned as the interview, followed by the commentary on the live interview, followed by the podcast upload, followed by more commentary on the podcast from those who couldn’t attent the live session, followed by the permanent availability of the content, ad infinitum, on the internet. You are now a participant in both the first and the second of five integral parts of this newer form of the town square, and thank you again.

Tim I’m glad to be a ‘part of,’ and Cleve is so luckyk to have MTB, your longstanding efforts, and the historical podcasts. We may be a cloudy city but in some ways we have more to offer than any place Ive lived and this kind of grassroots effort is one example, imo. Good to see you on Wednesday!

And I encourage everyone to read Jeff’s REALNEO post on the latest Mid Town Brews discussion (yesterday) on electric power and where we should get it and how. Very, very interesting. http://www.realneo.us/blog/jeff-buster/golden-rule-of-electrical-power-generate-in-someone-elses-back-yard
