Mural My Neighborhood – MMN

Dedication of the 16th MMN mural

Cleveland – September 19, 2011 – The City of Cleveland’s Bureau of Cultural Arts
(BCA) is pleased to announce the dedication of the 16th mural created by the Mural My
Neighborhood, MMN program. The new mural, entitled “Peace for All Mankind,”
occupies a space of over 1500 square feet, and fills up the entire north facing wall of the
Shop Rite Supermarket, located at 4606 West 130th Street. During the winter/spring
months, artist Dan Whitely led a team of youth artists through the process of mural training
to study local and national murals, use of imagery in murals, interpreting themes,
and the study of artists for styles to incorporate. The mural team then undertook
research to create the design. This past summer, Dan and the youth artists transferred
and painted the design that was approved by our community partners.

The “Peace for All Mankind” mural is a brilliant colored tapestry that blends elements of
nature with some of the world’s most scared edifices. Water, the life giving substance common
to all mankind, is represented through several waterfalls. Nature in its’ rugged beauty is
portrayed in the left half of the mural before giving way to sacred places of worship for people
of the world: the Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, the minarets of
Mecca, a Pagoda common to Asia. The mural’s overall feeling is one of serenity and peace.

The MMN initiative was started in 2006, with the goal to beautify Cleveland with brilliant
murals, one neighborhood at a time. MMN murals can be found in the Glenville, North
Collinwood, Detroit-Shoreway, Stockyards, Lee-Harvard, and St. Clair-Superior neighborhoods.
The MMN program is generously supported by The George Gund Foundation, The
Bruening Foundation, The Thomas White Foundation, The Fox Foundation,
Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, The Dominion Foundation, The Sherwin-Williams
Company, and The City of Cleveland Division of Recreation. “Peace for All Mankind”
is the fourth mural created under the leadership of Mr. Dan Whitely, a professional painter,
muralist, and educator at Shaker Heights High School.

Please join us as we dedicate the “Peace for All Mankind” mural on Wednesday, September
28th @ 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Shop Rite Supermarket, 4606 West 130th Street,
at the corner of West 130th & Wainfleet Avenue. Beverages and Cambodian food sponsored
by Cuisine Du Cambodge, 13124 Lorain Avenue in Cleveland.

Start Date: Friday, September 16, 2011

This is amazing news, everyone. The Cleveland Museum of Art and private collectors who have an amazing art foundation, are joining forces to create a satellite museum site. This is great news in itself. But the best part is, they are saving and preserving a beautiful building that has been known as the Oblak Building on W. 29th Street in Ohio City. It was born as a transformer station for the rail lines and trolleys and is an amazing piece of architecture. There is a crane inside that is beautiful and also architecturally amazing. So not only does the crane become the centerpiece, the building get preserved, but fabulous art will be featured there. I had this building for sale a few years ago and was always worried someone would buy it and turn it into a beautiful condo but take out the crane. I know, I’m not supposed to worry about that but I did. There will be a press conference on Friday.

The owner of the building was/is amazing himself. He’s a fabulous metal/bronze sculptor named Ron Dewey of Light Sculpture Works. He is responsible, for example, for the beautiful bronze of the Stefanski’s at the Third Fed Headquarters. If you click the above link it takes you to his site at the point of some of his commissioned work.

I haven’t been this excited about something happening in Cleveland in quite some time! 3C

> BACKGROUND INFO
>
> These cars are being retired from CityWheels — a small carsharing club my wife and I coordinated for the last five years.
> Carefully screened members drove a few times per month for shopping, errands, appointments, etc.
> Most were graduate students in medicine, nursing, law and engineering at Case Western Reserve University (i.e. – responsible, high- performing people).
> They didn’t need to drive very often, so they shared a car instead of buying their own.
>
> I bought each vehicle new from Motorcars in Cleveland Heights, and personally took them for all maintenance.
> We are as honest as they come — I will tell you everything I know about each car’s history and upcoming needs.
> No surprises.
>
> They are priced so low only because we are disbanding the club — we’d like to pay our creditors and finish up.
> But they have all been solid, dependable cars and we would otherwise keep them for years more.

Lakewood is known for trees, food, musicvenues, bars and wonderful turn of the century homes with all the character you could want.

But sometimes you want new and shiny. Lakewood figured out how to do that with Rock port Square Town Homes on the City’s east end. Quality construction. In fact, awards abound for the design, the energy efficiency and the sense of place it brought to the neighborhood. The number of windows in each unit allows for an abundance of natural light, the appliances are energy efficient, in fact the complex meets National Green Building Standards. You can have a courtyard. And a choice of floor plans, there are three units left to sell.

For those who are moving in from out of town, here is the skinny on the neighborhood. Lakewood is part of NE Ohio’s food mecca explosion. Melt Bar and Grilled is nearby and it could become a weekly favorite. A Cleveland institution, Brothers Lounge, is just east of Rock port Square. Known as a phenomenal jazz and blues venue, and it’s only five minutes from these town homes.

My favorite West side music venue is The Winchester, just South of Rockport Square. It’s like an old fashioned venue with seats up close and personal. Both Brothers and The Winchester are smaller, just like music should be heard.

Just East of Rock Port Square is the annual Clifton Arts Festival. You can walk to the event and enjoy hundreds of artisans and their wares. Lakewood has two branches of a library, pools, Irish pubs, bars, lots of places that are not chain restaurants (and there are a few of those as well). As a matter of fact, Lakewood is listed as the best places to live in a Scene Magazine poll.

I’m holding Rockport Square open on back to back Sundays, beginning tomorrow. Stop by for your own private tour, you won’t be disappointed! There is a five year tax abatement, good financing available, and as I mentioned, a few different floor plans to choose from. I’ll be there from 2-4 PM, please stop by! Peace Out – 3C

Do you listen to the news and ask where is the real news, I could do better? Maybe you can, and maybe John Carroll University can help you hone your journalistic skills. Here is a link to The Cleveland Urban Journalism Workshop site (and you can find an on line application there as well). It could lead you to a great career! Peace Out – 3C

The completion of the Towpath Trail got a bit closer this week when two parcels of land were acquired. I started surfing the Web to find out if that meant it was ready to go, and found out the answer is no. There are still parcels to be acquired. Thanks to the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission’s Weblog, I found the Ohio Canal Corridor/Towpath Trail website. That’s where I found out about the need to acquire a bit more land.

The mission statement on the home page of the OCC website:
…. To create a park system that follows the route of the historic Ohio Canal from Cleveland through Zoar to Dover/New Philadelphia by promoting historic preservation and interpretation expanded recreational opportunities and sensitive economic developments.

Are you a runner? The Towpath Trail Marathonwill be held on October 10th in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I’ve not run worth a darn the last few years, but when I did, I would have loved to be able to do so on the Towpath. If you are a runner, or just someone who wants to help motivate the ‘pack,’ this would be a good way to do so and at the same time acquaint yourself with the Towpath in all it’s glory. Most of you already know about it, (the Path, not the race!) but we can never get tired of going there, can we?

Not into running but like wine? How about this event: A Toast to the Trail, a wine event to be held on August 21st. Since tickets run from $75 to $1,000 I guess it’s a way to fundraise for the completion of the Trail? Peace Out 3C
