Appropriating a PD Article to Discuss Ban on Appropriating Articles

July 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Appropriate no? :-)   I heard about this when David and Dan Marburger’s idea was first brought to light. This James McCarty PD article on protecting newspaper content gets to the initial crux of the issue and is worth reading.

Remember the song Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles? (link is to You Tube)?  Newspapers say the Internet is killing their business.

Bloggers don’t like other people appropriating their information without credit.  I feel strongly that any inclusion of material should accurately credit the original source.  This means news articles posted on line as well.

Many times I have written here about news articles or events and what I try to do (because they don’t always include them!) is provide more links to get to more information about the item being discussed.  I also have my own opinions about articles.  So I do what the Marburgers criticize bloggers about: I rewrite and include information from news articles. What is the point of having information available if it can’t generate interest, discussion and more in depth analysis?

What do you think? The Marburgers think Congress will be contacting them to save newspapers and pass new laws.

Radio still exists, and in reality, videos are not what is harming the radio business. Newspapers can exist, and one commenter on the McCarty article said that newspapers are the ones getting on l ine benefits for free. Another person said what I really believe: papers need to keep good content coming in order to survive, and not worry about others providing content on the Internet.

Having said this, let me reiterate.  I hate shoulds, but this one needs to be said: credit should always be given to the original source of information when you are posting it on your own Internet sites.

Peace out – 3C
