Joe Crea of the PD loves to give us lists that make our Pavlovian glands start salivating.  Today he does a list of 12 outstanding sandwich shops in NE Ohio.  He mentions Grum’s Italian sub (I always love their roast beef but what do I know!).  It’s in Cleveland Heights. 

Crea included Almanar Market on W. 117th.  He is so right! Ever try to turn North on W. 117th from Lorain and find yourself  behind someone pulling into this market’s lot? The sandwich’s could be one of the best reasons.  Listen to Joe Crea’s description and you will see why:

ALMANAR MARKET

Get in line at the counter of this food-service Middle Eastern food market, then order the Shawarma sandwich ($4.99). The counter man slices your choice of meat or chicken from the tall rotating cones and loads it into a soft pita — then adds your choice of toppings, ranging from halved cornichons and bright pink turnip pickles to tomatoes, lettuce and onion. When he asks whether to add the mellow tahini sauce and a really zesty hot sauce (more flavorful than fiery), say yes. The crispy-edged meat, pink on the inside, drips juice as it’s carved, and the flavors mingle magnificently with the other ingredients, especially after the foil-wrapped sandwich is grilled on a sandwich press. One bite and you’re hooked.
