2008 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony…Your Thoughts?

March 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Was this the first time the ceremony was broadcast live on cable? Maybe I just never saw it in prime time before.  No commercials, a definite plus. Did you watch? Yeah I know, there are a lot of people who could be inducted who are not but I didn’t have an issue with anyone being inducted this year….for a change.  When Billy Joel talked about the demise of the record industry it didn’t sound like the usual ‘the record industry sucks’ mantra. It had a ring of finality to it.  Audience faces were more morose than usual. Half the audience was enjoying themselves… a lot!  The other half? Suits who did not seem to be having a great time.  Well I guess that part is  not new. The music was fabulous, especially with Iggy Pop and Joan Jett jammin’ out tunes. John Mellencamp? I got a hug from him backstage at Farm Aid in 1985. (And who can sit still through his songs? Not me, but some of the peeps at the ceremony were stiff as boards and I’m tellin’ ya, they need a DNA check if they can sit still during Pink Houses.)

Anyway, here are some links to get you into the mood. Oddly (very) this is a link from Fox News that showed up on Google alert. Want to know some of the monetary details about The Hall and the Ceremony? Check it out.  Yes I know, it’s Fox, but check anyway. Leonard Cohen’s website is here. He wrote a poem/ode for his speech and it brought tears to my eyes. Here is a cool story on Cohen from the Ottawa Citizen.

If you want to watch the Ceremony on line go here - it takes you to a video on ifilm.  You HAVE to go here: The Dave Clark 5 website. As soon as it opens their own wall of sound will hit you. The best part about the site? It becomes a juke box and you click the buttons to play a song.  John Mellencamp’s MySpace page is here.

The Ventures have made over 250 albums. Do you freakin believe that? And I learned on the show tonight that they wrote the theme song to Hawaii 5-0. Nice chunk of change on that one! I find this amusing; I counted over ten Madonna MySpace pages. One says ‘this is the good Madonna group.’  Oy! Better to link to kabbalah.com since this is something she believes in. There are even blogs on this site.

Do the blues and especially blues that includes harmonica set the hair up on the back of your neck? Omg it works for me every time. Little Walter was inducted, and this site allows you to stream some of his music. He played with Muddy Waters but trust me, listening to him in his own right will touch you to the inside of your bones. It’s that good.

Here is the link to the Pee Dee section on the Induction Ceremony. Pretty extensive: even photos from NYC and from the simulcast party here. New York Times coverage here…….I can’t help but wonder if they are (The R and R Hall of Fame) getting out of Museum mode and getting their act together for next year’s ceremony.  I also wonder if Leonard Cohen would allow me to pretend to be a relative and go in his place :-)    Peace Out – 3C

The Dave Clark 5 was the first concert I ever attended in 1966. I was 12 years old. A friend I had back then got me to sneak out of the house and we took the bus into Boston Garden and had a great time.

When I look back I can’t believe I did it at that age. Parents didn’t know and I got busted when I got home.

What a nice memory Jay, maybe made even a bit better because you were mischievious :-) Did you watch the ceremony at all? Kind of poignant that only three were there to experience it but still cool to reminisce.
